Tumblers Made into Whimsies  
Series 2: Northwood Grape and Cable

This series covers Northwood Grape & Cable. Most of the whimsies were made in the Jack-in-Pulpit shape. The whimsies shown in this series are the hat shape.  Of course there were millions of pieces with the Grape and Cable pattern including the whimsies made from tumblers.

I just recently was able to get the green tumbler whimsy.  I now have the green, marigold and purple.  I am wondering if other colors were made from the tumblers.  Since there were so many ice colors made, I wonder if they made whimsies.  If anyone out there has other colors, I would like to hear from you.  

The second color shown is the marigold Grape & Cable Tumbler and Hat whimsy.

This has nothing to do with whimsies but I have a couple of stories about Grape & Cable.  When Roland and I started collecting around 1969-70, we were invited to look at a collection in Hutchinson, Kansas.  At that time Grape & Cable was the “in” thing and unless it had the “N” marking we looked the other way.  Anyway, these people had nothing but dark purple Grape & Cable lay out on a huge bed.  It was all for sale.  We were so awe struck.  Never bought a piece and we probably could have bought it all for a few hundred dollars; but at the time, we did not have that few hundred dollars.

The last color shown is the purple Grape & Cable Tumbler and Hat whimsy.

The second experience was a trip to visit Mrs. Hartung.  Again, we were just beginners.  She had a huge baby grand piano.  It was covered with white carnival with a lot of Grape & Cable.  Again, no money and star struck, we came home empty handed.
