Tumblers Made into Whimsies
Series 1: Dugan Flora & Grape and Fenton Variant
by Don Kime

Since I have a collection of tumblers, I thought it would be interesting to collect pieces that were made from tumblers.  Most of the time in auction brochures, they are listed as hat shapes.  Since I also collect vases under 10 inches, I chose to call them vases.  I must admit I do have one that is truly a “Hat Shape”.  Thanks to my good friend, Dave Cotton, who gave it to me at one of the Air Capital Conventions. So let’s begin the series with Floral & Grape and Floral and Grape Variant.  This is a very common pattern.  Most of the whimsies are made in the Jack-in-pulpit shape.

In the left photo, the real hat shape is the variant made by Fenton.  In  the right photo the Jack-in-pulpit shape is made by Dugan. The cable around the top of the Dugan is more raised.  The Fenton Cable is more flat.

Shown on the left is a green Floral and Grape Variant tumbler made by Fenton and on the right is a marigold Floral and Grape tumbler made by Dugan. The Fenton tumblers are a bit taller than the Dugan ones. The very distinctive difference is on the Dugan ones. The grapevine and grapes overlap the mold lines and on the Fenton they do not.
