Items Made From Tumblers
By Don Kime

This is a series on items made from tumblers. Some call them hat shape, whimisies or vases. Since I collect small vases I tend to call them small vases. I have written about tumblers in other articles and now you will be able to see photographs you haven't seen before of the hat shapes and vases made from tumblers.

STORK & RUSHES
This pattern is attributed to the Dugan Glass Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania.  Two different molds were used.  One had a beaded version and the other a lattice band. Both were made in the so-called hat shape or small vase.

GRAPE ARBOR
Another Northwood product.  The majority are of excellent color and iridescence.  They were made in custard as well.  The custard hat shape is plain on the inside where the others have the ribbing on the interior.  There is a custard tumbler that has the iridescence applied, but never have seen a hat shape.  There are only 2 or 3 know tumblers with iridescence.

FLORAL and GRAPE
Another Dugan product, however, Fenton also made this pattern which we call the variant.  There is quite a difference.  The Dugan pattern is partially covered with the grape clusters, vines and leaves.  It sort of looks like the vines are climbing up the mold lines.  This is not true with the Fenton Floral Grape Variant.  The hat shape I have is the Dugan version.  The Dugan has a raised cable that borders the band.  The Fenton variant does not have the cable or line.

GRAPE and CABLE
This pattern is one of the most known pieces that was made in Carnival Glass.  It is one of Northwood's great patterns.  There were two sizes of tumblers and I expect the hat shape was probably made from the smaller one, but this is only a guess on my part.  There is the plain and stippled.  My hat shape is plain, but somewhere in my memory I believe I have seen the stippled one as well.

BUTTERFLY and BERRY
A Fenton product and they made hundreds of pieces in this pattern.  There were many vases made from the tumbler with a variation of top shapes.  I especially like the crimped edge top.  As far as I know, there never was a hat shape made out of the tumbler.

WESTERN THISTLE
This tumbler and vase were made by Riihimaen Lasi of Finland.  The vase is found many times in a light marigold.  I looked a long time before I found a deep marigold one. I would like to have a blue vase and they do exist.  They are thick and heavy glass.  It is a pretty tumbler and makes a very nice vase.
